Medical Librarians
McGill's medical librarians have always been leaders in promoting cooperation between libraries and librarians. In 1898,
Margaret Charlton and Dr. George M. Gould, editor of the Philadelphia Medical Journal, both strongly influenced by William
Osler, met to form the Medical Library Association. Margaret Charlton was secretary of the MLA during its formative years,
and since then McGill has contributed several MLA presidents, including C.F. Wylde, W.W. Francis, and Frances Groen.
In 1976, it was David Crawford the current Health Sciences Librarian, who was instrumental in setting up the Canadian Health
Libraries Association/l'Association des bibliothèques de la santé du Canada and was its first, and third, President. Many other
staff members have been active members of professional associations and contributors to the scholarly literature.
