Biographical Sketch / Administrative History

D. Sclater Lewis was born in Montreal and educated at McGill, where he received his B.Sc. (1907), M.Sc. (1908) and M.D.C.M. (1912). He taught briefly at Johns Hopkins Medical School, and joined the Canadian Army Medical Corps at the outbreak of World War I, rising to the rank of Major. After the war he joined the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University as Demonstrator in Medicine and Lecturer in Clinical Therapeutics. He became Assistant Professor in 1924, Associate Professor in 1939 and Professor in 1949. Throughout this period he was a physician at the Royal Victoria Hospital, and Acting Physician-in-Chief from 1943 to 1944. Lewis was President of a number of medical and medical-historical societies, and author of histories of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Scope and Content

Fonds shows Dr. D. Sclater Lewis’ medical and medical-historical activities, from 1904 until his death. The fonds contains correspondence, lecture notes and notes for addresses and published papers. General note: See also McGill University Archives M.G. 2030. Conservation and description of boxes 1-2 still required. Original fonds description 30 August 2000; accruals processed December 2016.

Custodial History

Acc. 568 is a gift of Mrs. D. Sclater Lewis, Westmount, 17 June 1977; and acc. 577 is a gift of David J. Lewis and Mrs. E.R. Lewis, Westmount, in 1977 and 1978. Old accession numbers 568 and 577. New acquisition boxes 3-5 previously conserved at the Royal Victoria Hospital and donated by the Arts and Heritage Centre at the McGill University Health Centre to the Osler Library in January, 2015.
