Biographical Sketch / Administrative History

Harriet Drake was born to William Drummond Wilson and Elizabeth Isabel Cronyn on March 8, 1872, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Upon the death of her mother, she was adopted by John Drake of Bay City, Michigan. Harriet returned to Canada, the country of her parents’ birth, in 1904 to train as a nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated in 1907. During World War I, she spent time overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Core from McGill. After the war, she became superintendent of nurses at the Norwegian Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. She died in Kingston, Ontario, in 1973.

Scope and Content

The fonds consists primarily of letters written during World War I to Drake’s sister Daisy Molson and sister’s husband, John Dunham Molson. Letters are accompanied by transcriptions and biographical material prepared by Martha E. McKenna. Also included are newspaper clippings dated 1915-1918 on Drake and the Canadian Army Medical Corps hospital run by McGill, one pocket notebook documenting Drake’s time with the CAMC in France from 1915-1916, and a membership card to the Royal Club for Ladies from Beyond the Seas, dated 1919.
